Saturday Market Haul

I went to the Wolfville Farmer's Market for the last time today. I've got the rest of my summer weekends booked before I move back home so I decided to take advantage of the sunny morning and take myself out for a coffee and a stroll through Wolfville. Started my day at Just Us Coffeehouse with a flat white, a muffin and Harry Potter, before walking down Wolfville's quaint streets to the Saturday market.

If you've been around here for any length of time you'll know I frequently went to markets when living in England. The nice thing about living in the Valley is there are daily markets and weekend markets; fresh produce, baked goods, delicious coffees, handmade gifts, local brews.

When I first walked in I overheard "Did you get a donut?". My ears immediately perked up; Last time I was at the market I didn't see any donuts. Sure enough, first stall on my left: Binky's Donuts. Choosing which one to buy was my hardest decision of the day. Did I go for the Norman: maple bacon flavored? The Cynthia: ginger cardamom glaze? Dr Sam: blueberries, cloves and orange glaze? In the end I took the Zingus: lemon with french tarragon spiced glaze. I know.

Immediately when I ate it I regretted not getting a half dozen. Or a dozen.

My other market purchases were fresh peaches and rhubarb from a stall overflowing with vegetables and fruit in a rainbow of colors. Serious, I've never seen brighter beets or more colorful bunches of carrots. I'm planning on doing some baking with my haul, so stay tuned for that (fingers crossed my attempt at pie turns out!).

Strange Days

It's been a bit of a strange year. Readjusting to life in Newfoundland, relocating to Nova Scotia for the summer, and now preparing to return home again. Seeing someone then not seeing someone. Repeat. Repeatedly. Thinking I know what I want then realizing I was way off mark.

Sometimes (a lot of the time) my fickle nature annoys me. I can't seem to keep my feet in the same place or my head on straight in any aspect of my life. Obviously, I'm not the first, last or only twenty-something to feel like this. But with friends buying houses and getting married and starting careers it can sometimes feel that way.

So: home again. Semi-set goals for a foggy future. Ready for the remainder of August, the cabin trips planned with old friends and new, the river-tubing and cocktail making. Then the flight, the re-resettling in Newfoundland, in the town I grew up in. If there's anything I'm good at it's changing paths. I'm just not entirely sure if that's something that it's good to be good at.

Summer Skies

Saturday, August 13, 2016

I've been lucky enough to see some truly beautiful skies this summer, both in Nova Scotia & Newfoundland. All snapped on my iPhone, these remind me of weddings, lazy days at the lake, hanging out on the back steps and leaning out car windows on evening ice cream runs.

Watercolor Macarons

These macarons definitely aren't perfect. I baked them in an unfamiliar oven which ran hot and they are perhaps a tad bit undermixed. But even so, the almond buttercream tastes delicious sandwiched between the two almond shells, and the watercolor decorations are pretty cute (if I do say so myself!).

Outtakes

Trying to take photos in Newfoundland - in February - in the snowy woods - isn't exactly a piece of cake. I probably got about 4 decent photos out of ...ninety-eight. Here are some of the more foolish ones my mom snapped.

HI!

It's 2016! I live in Canada again! And I'm now 26! A lot of things!

Celebrated my birthday on Friday night with a pizza and prosecco (so much prosecco) party with all my pals. Cake, balloons, donuts, pizza and friends. Dream.

Monday my mom and I trudged into the woods to take those balloon pictures. It may look easy-peasy and like we got some great snaps but let me tell you, there are about 5 good ones out of 100. Not kidding. I'll probably share some outtakes later. Balloons are difficult when it's windy and it is hard to tell what way a 2 should be when its four feet high floating above your head.

And yesterday, on my actual birthday, it was a disgusting blizzard out so I hibernated most of the day. It was also coincidentally pancake day, so we whipped up some bacon pancakes for breakfast and ate cupcakes for lunch, as you do on your birthday. I also opened dozens of cards from friends and family and pretty packages that arrived perfectly on time in the post, despite the raging storm. Then pizza for supper.

26 is going to be a great year, I can already tell by the food I've been eating.

Thank you so much to everyone who wished me happy birthday, whether it was on various social medias, by text or in person. I felt the love people, I really did.

Until next time! xxxx
